Miss Julie, August Strindberg Welsh language tour

March 28, 2018 by

A new Welsh language version of the August Strindberg play, Miss Julie, will tour venues in Wales this spring.

The RCT Theatres’ production marks a rare chance for Welsh speakers to enjoy this production in the Welsh Language.

Adapted in the Welsh language and set in Wales at the turn of the 20th century, this thrilling revival of Strindberg’s enduring classic is a tale of passion and power, where class barriers and social attitudes are torn apart.

Miss Julie is directed by and stars Gareth John Bale. He said, “It’s a wonderful, naturalistic play. I first studied it at College and have wanted to do it since. The themes in it – social status, gender conflict and the playwright’s attitude towards feminism are as relevant now as they were when the play was written in 1888. Perhaps more so. The stakes are high in this play, and that excites me.

“The three characters in the play present a challenge to the actors playing them and the director. The temptation is to see them as one-dimensional but there is so much more to them than that. We intend to dig a little deeper to explore what happens to these three people on Midsummers Eve.

“We’re absolutely delighted to present this Welsh Language adaptation of Strindberg’s classic text, and to be working with Gareth John Bale again. This production is something we feel passionate about, it’s the first time we have produced and toured nationally a Welsh Language production and it marks the start of an annual event.”

The play also stars Gwenllian Higginson in the title role.

Miss Julie is an RCT Theatres production supported by Arts Council Wales. This is the first of a regular programme of Welsh language theatre from the company

“RCT Theatres mission is simple – to create and present high quality accessible productions in partnership with artists and communities, that is both relevant and an enjoyable experience – and we’re confident that Miss Julie does just that,” Angela Gould, Theatre Programme and Audience Development Manager

The production is suitable for ages 14+.
