It is one of musical theatre’s most famous female roles, the wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Perón, from her rise to political power, her idolisation by the country’s workers to her early death.
This Ken Wright production of the Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice musical, here directed by Bob Tomson, rests or falls on the central character and Lucy O’Byrne plays the part perfectly.
My favourite scene is undoubtedly the now iconic song Don’t Cry for me Argentina in Act Two which has become probably as well know as Eva herself! We all have such wonderful songs as On This Night of a Thousand Stars, You Must Love Me, and Another Suitcase in Another Hall.
The singing of the iconic Don’t Cry for Me Argentina was breathtaking and chilling, the exquisite costume stunning and O’Byrne sang beautifully.
This was a very entertaining show, with fantastic music, choreography and glorious costumes from this chic and elegant period for couture.
The costume design and hairstyles definitely caught the time period in which it was set, all due to costume designer Caroline Hannam and wigs supervisor Barbara Alderson-Byford.
