New writing company Invisible Ink, have spent the past two years carefully collecting personal stories for their new show The Terrible Things I’ve Done.
Audiences in Bristol’s The Wardrobe Theatre and Chapter, Cardiff will enjoy stories that range from the toe-curlingly awkward to the downright heart-breaking, as the production navigates our fallible nature.
Invisible Ink thrust their audience to the front and centre of their productions. The audience’s experiences are integral to their work, so much so that the company are offering the opportunity for audiences to unburden themselves via their “confession booth” which will be available in the foyer before and after the show. No longer will you need to carry the burden of your misdemeanours… There will be no judgement – they promise!
This production, like all of Invisible Ink’s work, is a collaboration from the outset – they thrive on experimenting in the rehearsal room, relishing the process of storytelling and making creative choices. Company Co-artistic Director and Director of the show Sita Calvert-Ennals said of the piece
“We are not afraid to work across many different mediums to find the best way to tell a story. The Terrible Things I’ve Done came about by looking at themes we care about. We were interested in questions around forgiveness and judgement. Can we ever truly forgive ourselves for the darker aspects of our personalities?”
Fellow company Artistic Director and show’s writer Alan Harris talks of the development and writing process
“We collected stories from many different people in many different places, always giving the assurance of anonymity. Working with such source material there is a responsibility – not so much to the words themselves but to the spirit of the stories. As a writer it’s not my place to judge but, and this is important, you can’t be so fair-handed in writing the script that it takes away the impact of the stories.”
Which is true of this warm, honest and thought-provoking production where – no one is let off the hook. The company hope that audiences will enjoy the journey the production takes, from laughing at naughty doings to gasping at jaw-droppingly terrible acts. Audiences may see a little of themselves in some of these stories and may even leave with their conscience a little lighter as a result
