Saz’iso, an ensemble brought together by superproducers Joe Boyd and Jerry Boys, well-known for their leading roles in world music, will bring ‘Saze’ – a polyphonic music that hails from the stark landscapes of Southern Albania to Pontio next month as part of the arts centre’s popular Cabaret style evenings.
The hand-picked ensemble includes some of the finest contemporary performers of this mesmerizing style, which originates in the cradles of Saze around the towns of Korça and Përmet, opening a window into Albania’s fascinating musical traditions.
The producers of Saz’iso’s debut album released this October were Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, Cubanismo. Songhai) and the Grammy-winning sound engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Ali Farka Touré, Orchestra Baobab).
Elen ap Robert, Pontio’s artistic director said, “With its ancient roots, Saze has the power to entrance any listener, even if they are strangers to Southern Albanian music. Whether you’re a fan of Balkan, Mediterranean, Eastern and Central European music or you’re just curious about discovering new music, come along for a relaxed evening of unforgettable music.”
