Welsh National Opera is looking at the impact of Arts Council of England large cut in its grant towards touring to English venues.
The opera company is now almost equally funded by ACE and the Arts Council of Wales and the level of Welsh funding is also under review.
WNO only takes its main repertoire to Llandudno in Wales and performs two seasons at its home base, Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
The company gas not said it will no longer tour to the English venues, including Bristol, Oxford and Birmingham and the reduced funding, approximately £4m, is presumably dependent on the touring.
WNO said, “Whilst we are grateful for Arts Council of England’s continued support, we are disappointed by the announcement today that we will receive a substantial cut to our funding. We fully appreciate the pressures that ACE themselves are facing, but as we experience rising costs and reduced income in the current challenging economic climate, we will need to review the impact of this decision on the delivery of our services in England in light of the announcement.”
