Don Giovanni was a beautiful production at the Wales Millennium Centre by the Welsh National Opera. The show was witty, entertaining and the vocals and acting was also wonderful. The show is sung is Italian and has English subtitles.
It seemed that there weren’t any empty seats in the auditorium as the show was very popular, the audience was mainly of a mature crowd with a few exceptions which felt very appropriate for the show being viewed.
Gavin Ring and David Stout
Don Giovanni (sung by Gavin Ring) is a man who had seduced over 2000 women, as his servant Leporello (sung by David Stout) tells one of his latest victims.
The story began with him raping Donna Anna and killing her father. Over the course of the show, he attempts to seduce more and more women, including a young peasant woman on her wedding day, by the name of Zerlina. The show then goes on to show the Commendatore’s statue offering Don Giovanni a chance of repentance and redemption but he refuses and is, in result, dragged down to Hell.
I feel that the story is inappropriate for a young audience however other than that, it was a brilliant show with an excellent set design, beautiful costumes and wonderful music, thanks to everyone who worked so hard to put this together.
I saw this production at 7pm on Thursday 22nd February at the Wales Millennium Centre.
